Clermont City Council members turned to longtime former councilman Keith Mullins to serve out the unexpired term of the late Ray Goodgame.

Council members tapped Mullins, who served on the council for 18 years before his defeat in 2017. He’ll take over Seat 2 until the winner of the Nov. 5 election takes office.

Goodgame, who served on the council for 15 years, died July 28 at 85 after a long battle with myelodysplastic syndrome, a blood disorder.

On Tuesday, council members and City Manager Darren Gray presented a proclamation and plaque to Goodgame’s family, declaring that day as Ray Goodgame Day.

“We appreciate Mr. Mullins stepping in to help,” Clermont Mayor Gail Ash said in a news release. “This will allow us to take care of pressing city business without a learning curve because he sat on the council before.”

Mullins made a comeback attempt last year but fell short in a bid for mayor.

“I am pleased and honored to be able to serve Clermont during this transitional time until a new council member can be seated,” Mullins said.

He isn’t running in the fall election. The Seat 2 race will pit Joe Gustafson against Jim Purvis. Also on the ballot, Seat 4 incumbent Heidi Brishke will face a challenge from Ebo Entsuah.
