A Deltona man was charged with extortion after coercing a British woman he met on the internet to give him more than $8,000 or he'd tell her husband and her employer about their online relationship, deputies said Tuesday.
Christian George Smith, 37, was arrested early Tuesday at his home and taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he remained held Tuesday afternoon on $25,000 bail.
The victim, who lives in South Wales, emailed Volusia County Sheriff's deputies last week and begged them to investigate, saying she was being blackmailed.
She said that in July, he "intimidated her into paying him $8,714 in exchange for him not to send photos and videos to her husband, family and workplace."
The woman said she met Smith online five years ago and that the relationship was platonic at first, but veered into a romantic direction this year before she changed her mind and told Smith she wanted to work on her ailing marriage.
After the victim confessed to her husband, Smith began threatening him as well, investigators said.
She said her employer, a funeral home, has suspended her over the mess as they conduct an internal investigation.
Detectives believe Smith may have extorted or tried to extort other victims and ask anyone with information to contact Volusia Sheriff’s Detective Paul via email at [email protected].
